Pack your skis to Torino for the Olympics, your cleats to Germany for the World Cup, and don't forget your joystick to Monza Italy for the World Cyber Games. In October 2006 the world will take part in another global festival as the World Cyber Games comes to the city of Monza.

--- A global festival in the 21st century ---

The World Cyber Games combines jaw-rubbing new technology with the thrill of sports and the exhilaration of gaming. Created in 2001, the goal of the WCG was to create global harmony to participation in E-Sports. During that time, the WCG has grown to become the world's largest gaming festival, with more than 1 million participants in the year-round tournaments spanning 67 countries. The development of the WCG has been remarkable as the event has grown at a faster rate than other international celebrations like the Olympics and the World Cup. Like these world-wide events, the WCG has taken on a truly global characteristic. Since the adoption of the host-city concept in 2002, the WCG Grand Final's traveled to major cities around the world, including Seoul, San Francisco and Singapore. In a short 5-year span the WCG successfully positioned itself as the must-attend global event for gamers. The ritual of the WCG has raised the profile of E-Sports into a truly world-wide spectacle.

--- The pioneer of global E-Sports ---

Held in Singapore, the 2005 WCG Grand Final drew global attention. With 679 gamers representing 67 countries and attracting more than 55,000 spectators, 400 reporters and 500 industry representatives to the tournament. Furthermore, the WCG attracted worldwide media coverage from 60 Minutes, CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, Sports Illustrated and The Economist. The media frenzy behind the WCG has helped promote E-Sports around the world. Many governments around the world have embraced the idea of E-Sports. And last year 30 governments supported the WCG either directly or indirectly. The WCG is attractive for host cities because it stimulates the economy as well as the gaming and IT industry. Singapore, the host city of the 2005 WCG Grand Final estimates that hosting the tournament helped elevate its gaming industry's technical knowledge and creativity. In addition, the Straits Times, Singapore's No.1 daily newspaper, reported that the country took in about 53.5 million US dollars in tourism during the WCG Grand Final. To host cities the WCG brings not only economic benefits but intangible ones as well. As a result, hosting the WCG Grand Final has become a much coveted prize. Bidding for the right to host the tournament is very competitive.

--- Beyond the Game ---

The WCG is not just a gaming tournament. The WCG is not just about games. Participation on a global level, it has become a way for a generation of gamers to communicate with one another. Overcoming the barriers of language, nationality and culture, this is consistent with WCG mission of celebrating harmony, fair play, the marvels of technology and sportsmanship to the spectacle of E-Sports. The WCG has achieved these goals by supporting 4 activities: First, WCG hosts IT exhibition that allow companies to demonstrate new technologies. Second, the WCG coordinates Gaming Conferences where industry leaders can engage the public. Third, the WCG sanctions gaming tournaments where gamers from around the world can demonstrate their skills. And lastly, the WCG provides various cultural events to bring mutual understanding through cultural exchange.

With the past 5-years, the best gamers in the world have chosen the WCG to display their ability. In that same span, companies working on cutting-edge technologies have chosen the WCG as the arena to show off their latest ideas. This year the WCG will expand the span by hosting the pan-regional leagues in Europe, Asia and America. Starting with the WCG 2006 Euro Championship at CeBit in March, the WCG will present the Asian Championship to spread the spirit of E-Sports globally.

E-sports is attracting a strong following going into the 21st century. The World Cyber Games is using E-Sports to connect people across the globe. The 2006 WCG Grand Final will bring the E-Sports experience to Europe in the same way that it did in America in 2004 and Asia in 2005. Come October, the world's attention will be focused on the heart of Europe. As the 2006 WCG Grand Final will be held in the city of Monza Italy, renowned for its Formula One Racing. In October however, the revving engines and screeching tyres of the road royals of Monza will yield to a new breed of athletes doing with keyboards and mouse pads.
