1. Auditions for “American Idol” scheduled in Memphis have been canceled. Producers cited the extensive Hurricane Katrina relief efforts being coordinated in the city. Fox television said the auditions planed at the Fed Ex Forum won't be rescheduled so the city "can focus public safety efforts on the victims."

2. Hilary Duff has pledged to donate $250, 000 to help Katrina victims on the Gulf Coast. The 17-year-old singer actress will give $200,000 to the American Red Cross and $50,000 to USA Harvest which is supplying food to shelters.

3. And Ang Lee premiered his new film "Brokeback Mountain" at the Venice Film Festival. The Taiwanese-born director of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" has jumped into yet another genre with this film. It's an American Western, but this is no classic cowboy tale.
