Why is the United States the one pressing corruption charges against officials of soccer's world governing body? 

According to the Swiss Office of Justice, which carried out the arrests, the cases fall into US jurisdiction because "these crimes were agreed and prepared in the US, and payments were carried out via US banks." 

One of the FBI's key informants, American Chuck Blazer, also used to be the deputy in charge of football leagues in the North American, Central American, and Caribbean regions. He provided information that suggested a wider web of illegal activities. 

Acting US Attorney Kelly Currie of the Eastern District of New York said on Wednesday, that the actions of the 14 accused affected the Unites States in multiple aspects.
