The damaged Yangtze River cruise ship Eastern Star has been moved around 10 kilometres upstream of its accident site following concerns the ship may be further destroyed.

The ship is being moved for three reasons. First, because of the strong currents at its original site; secondly, the depth of the river here is only 15 meters; and third, the ship is near the main channel and is affecting the passage of other ships.

A State Council investigation team, joined by over 20 prominent experts, is undertaking a full investigation into the disaster.  The team has interviewed the survivors, including the sunken cruise ship's captain and the chief engineer, as well as the ship's designer and witnesses.

Experts have also collected and analysed meteorological data, and ship information, including its design drawings and certification papers. The team has also boarded the ship to gather evidence including photos and computer data.

The disaster took place on June 1st. The death toll presently stands at 434 with eight people still missing. Fourteen people survived the disaster.
