CCTV9英语新闻:香港立法委员选举改革运动开始辩论(在线收听

The Hong Kong legislature has started its debate today on the single largest democratic reform plan in the city's history. No later than Friday, the legislature will vote on the motion to amend the Basic Law, and grant universal suffrage under a framework, which is endorsed by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.

If the proposal is passed, future candidates for the special administrative region's chief executive will be vetted by a 1,200-strong committee. The committee members are made up of representatives from different economic, political and social sectors. Hundreds of Hong Kong citizens have gathered outside the Legislative Council building, hoping to express their opinions on the reform plan. According to the latest poll conducted by three Hong Kong universities, about 47% of residents support the plan, which is 9% higher than the number of those opposing.
