They make up 30% of Italy's population, yet virtually no written accounts of their lives are left behind. They are treated as a commodity rather than people. The story is pieced together from the archaeological evidence, and suggests this building was a market place for human livestock. The auction is a defining moment for a slave. It can be the difference between a relatively comfortable existence and a hellish one. But on this day, no one, slave or owner, will be spared from the hell which is about to come. When the mountain erupts some slaves will die still chained. This man will be found where he fell unable to run away. The ash from Mt. Vesuvius smothers everything. It captures people fleeing, cowering, dying in the face of an unfolding disaster. As the ash hardens, it solidifies the shapes of its victims’ bodies, long after their flesh is gone.
