让我们先来看我们今天要学的第一个句子:He is down in the dumps.＂dump＂是＂垃 圾堆＂的意思.＂down in the dumps＂，字面上是掉进了垃圾堆.真是晦气,所以这个短语也表示＂垂头丧气,失望＂的意思.
一个足球,情系祖国内外的炎黄子孙,不知道为什么人们总爱把体育和为中国人民争气联 系在一起,对足球也寄予了厚望.然而事实不如人愿.When the Chinese heard that our soccer team had lost again, they were really down in dumps.(当中国人们得 知足球队输球时,他们很失望.)这也算得上国家级的大事了.
可对于国家级大事,我们除了呐喊助威外,似乎也帮不上别的忙了.还是让我们关心一下 我们身边的小事吧.Tom gets down in the dumps recently. (Tom近来心情很沮丧)朋友 们马上知道了怎么回事.Tom is in hot water with his girlfriend.

＂in hot water＂ 是我们要学习的第二个俚语.处在热水中, 是形容处境艰辛,这里＂in hot water＂ 和水深火热差不多.是＂有了麻烦＂的意思. Tom is down in the dumps, for he is in hot water with his girlfriend recently. Why? He said:" yesterday I sprang for a dinner to celebrate my girlfriend’s birthday [That’s fine!],but then I realize that yesterday was my former girlfriend’s birthday.[ha?--] (tom很沮丧.原来和他的女朋友的关系很紧张了.为什么呢.他说.昨天我请女朋友吃饭, 庆祝她生日,[那很好呀].但是后来,我才发现昨天是我上任女友的生日.)[啊........] 真是怪不得呀..但是tom还把他前任女友的事情都和盘托出了！He got into hot water after his girlfriend knew it .(让他的女友知道这件事情,他可就完蛋了)
