 February 2nd 1943. A major victory for the Soviet Union during World War II as the last of Nazi Germany’s forces in the battle of Stalingard, surrender. The Nazis and their Axis partners lost some 800,000 troops in the month-long battle. The Soviet lost more than a million soldiers.

1971. Idi Amin seizes power through a military coup in the east African country of Uganda. His brutal eight-year regime is believed to have killed hundreds of thousands of people.
1882. James Joyce, the Irish author whose works include "Ulysses" and "Finnegans Wake", is born in Dublin.
1996. "I am singing in the rain, just singing in the rain." Gene Kelly, dancer, actor and choreographer of “Singing in the Rain” fame dies in Beverly Hills, California. He was 83.
And 1979. Punk rock musician Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols, dies of drug overdose in New York. He was 21.
