 The Prime Minister has intervened for the first time in the growing scandal over the resignation of Minister Jaime Briggs. Malcolm Turnbull has condemned the release of a photo of a female diplomat caught who complained about the behavior of Mr. Briggs. Malcolm Turnbull issued a statement last night urging all parties to respect the privacy of all public servant. It’s unclear who leaked the photo to the media. 

 
Global share markets have started the year with a drop sparked by worries about China. Trading on the Shanghai stock market was automatically suspended when the index fell by 7 percent in response to disappointing manufacturing data. On Wall Street, the Dow Jones opened 400 points down, or more than 2 percent. In London, the FTSE closed down 2 percent and Germany’s DAX was 4 percent lower. 
 
Police in South Australia say the community will be deeply affected by the death of a father and his two young children. Police believed the family car was deliberately driven off a wharf at port Lincoln. Divers recovered the three bodies from the car yesterday afternoon. 
 
And fire crews suspected a children’s hoverboard sparked the damaging fire in a house in Melbourne last night. A family of five and their pets escaped the fire at Strathmore, in Melbourne’s northwest, but parts of the house were destroyed.
