散文:Dear March - Come in(在线收听

Dear March - Come in -
How glad I am -
I hoped for you before -

Put down your Hat -
You must have walked -
How out of Breath you are -
Dear March, Come right up the stairs with me -
I have so much to tell -

I got your Letter, and the Birds -
The Maples never knew that you were coming - till I called
I declare - how Red their Faces grew -
But March, forgive me - and
All those Hills you left for me to Hue -
There was no Purple suitable -
You took it all with you -

Who knocks? That April.
Lock the Door -
I will not be pursued -
He stayed away a Year to call
When I am occupied -
But trifles look so trivial
As soon as you have come

That Blame is just as dear as Praise
And Praise as mere as Blame -

This poem portrays March as a real friend to the poetess, someone who enters a house, keeps off his hat, gets his breath back, and may climb the stairs. There are also other actions attributed to March as if he were a human being: he wrote a letter to her, the Birds and the Maples were waiting for his arrival, the poetess herself had prepared the hills around her house to welcome him, even if she did not have enough colors to do it. She feels relaxed and happy to see March after his long absence.

All of a sudden April arrives and the poetess is annoyed because of it. She is busy with her guest, March, and she does not want to let April come in. She prefers the beginning of spring and the rebirth of nature more than the full blooming of the spring season. March is the month of colors and flowers, when nature springs up again. Birds also should be happy because it is time of migrations.

In the final stanza, she has come to the realization when one blames March for taking away the beautiful purple hues of the hills, it is also praising March for bringing those very gorgeous colors. Basically what March takes away, it also brings and that is why blame and praise follow each other. Just simply enjoy the humor and casual cheerfulness of the poem.
