Donald Trump yesterday called on FBI director James Comey to “hang tough” in his investigation of Hillary Clinton, predicting the US would see the criminal trial of a sitting president if she wins next week’s election.

“He’s gotta hang tough because a lot of people want him to do the wrong thing,” Mr Trump said as the FBI chief’s decision to reveal new details about the bureau’s investigation into Mrs Clinton’s emails just days ahead of the election was sharply questioned by former top law officers and prosecutors.
With polls tightening, Mr Trump stepped up his assault on Mrs Clinton, telling a campaign rally in Michigan her election would “mire our country in a constitutional crisis that we cannot afford”. He predicted the US would have “a criminal trial for a sitting president” adding that Russian president Vladimir Putin would “sit back and laugh”.
Mrs Clinton’s campaign was wrongfooted by the revelation that the FBI would seek to review newly discovered emails belonging to Huma Abedin, one of her closest aides, on devices she shared with her estranged husband, former Democratic congressman Anthony Weiner. “I think we hit the mother lode,” Mr Trump, proclaimed. “We can be sure what is in those emails is absolutely devastating.”
The White House said Mr Comey was in a “tough spot”. Josh Earnest, White House spokesman, said: “He is the one who will be in position to defend his actions in the face of significant criticism from a variety of legal experts including individuals who served in senior Department of Justice positions in administrations that were led by presidents in both parties.”
Almost 100 former prosecutors and Department of Justice officials from Democratic and Republican administrations wrote an open letter saying they were “astonished and perplexed” by Mr Comey’s decision to comment on evidence 11 days before the election.
The development threatened to damp Mrs Clinton’s momentum. Yesterday, the RealClearPolitics average gave Mrs Clinton a lead of just 2.5 points, the narrowest since late September. A Washington Post-ABC News poll put the two candidates in a nearly identically negative light, with nearly six in 10 registered voters having an unfavourable impression of them both.
