Portland, Oregon police say an anti-Trump protest turned into a riot with demonstrators smashing glass and lighting fires. Police used some sort of smoke or teargas to disperse the protesters. They say several people were arrested.

President-elect Donald Trump used Twitter to call the protests that had broken out against him nationwide "very unfair." Trump met with president Obama at the White House on Thursday.

Authorities in northern Afghanistan say a suicide car bomber attacked the German consulate. The attack killed at least four people and wounded more than one hundred.

Legendary singer and composer Leonard Cohen has died at the age of 82. Fans gathered around his home in Montreal.
