A senior official says president-elect Donald Trump offered the job of national security adviser to retired lieutenant general Michael Flynn. The official didn't say if Flynn accepted it. Flynn advised Trump throughout his presidential campaign.

A Trump transition team source says the president-elect will meet with Mitt Romney this weekend. Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee was a frequent critic of Trump during the campaign.

Iraqi military officers say they are advancing caustiously into areas of Mosul and getting stiff resistance from Islamic State militants. The Iraqi military is trying to drive the Islamic State forces from the city.

And election officials in North Carolina say they won't have all of the votes cast by election day counted in time for a Friday deadline. The state's governor's race and some other contests are still undecided.
