The European Union has admitted its last two new members for several years. The EU, a confederation of European countries joined together for greater cooperation on economic, agricultural, and other policy issues, will make Bulgaria and Romania the twenty-sixth and twenty-seventh members of the group on January 1st. The agreement includes the condition that each country make certain changes such as strengthening their judicial systems by the end of March. According to Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev, "This is the genuine and final fall of the Berlin Wall for Bulgaria." Countries such as Turkey and Croatia who are now hoping to join will have to wait several years while the European Commission reorganizes their structure and their process for admitting new members.
