Three people have been detained in southwest China's Yunnan Province following Friday's stampede that killed six students and injured 26 at a highly regarded primary school in the provincial capital of Kunming.

Li Lan, headmaster of Mingtong Primary School, Yang Lin, its vice headmaster, and Li Pengcheng, a physical education teacher at Mingtong, were detained on Monday for alleged involvement in the safety accident.

Seven officials were suspended or removed from their posts on Saturday.

Of the injured, 18 students had been discharged from hospital, while eight remain under observation.

Classes at the school have been suspended until the end of the National Day holiday on October 7.

Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai has sworn in as new president of Afghanistan and replaced the former president Hamid Karzai.

The ceremony was attended by some 1,400 national and international dignitaries in the Arg, the citadel which serves as the Presidential Palace, amid tight security in the capital.

After assuming office as president of the country, in his first decree Ghani Ahmadzai created the post of Chief Executive, a post equal to that of Prime Minister in the new government of national unity. He also administered the oath taking ceremony of Abdullah Abdullah as chief executive in the new administration.

This is the first time in the history of Afghanistan that power has been transferred peacefully from one president to another.
