China and the Czech Republic have signed a series of deals connected to a range of areas, including civil nuclear energy, finance, medical treatment and public health.

The agreements have been sealed on the sidelines of a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Czech President Milos Zeman here in Beijing.

Zeman is the first Czech president to visit China in nearly 10-years.

Xi Jinping says the current relationship between China and the Czech Republic has been hard won, and suggests the two sides need to understand and respect each other's core interests and major concerns.

Zeman has also sat down for a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang as part of his current trip to China.

The newly elected Afghan President Ashraf Ghani is arriving here in China today for an official visit.

This is his first foreign trip since taking office.

As part of his time here, Ghani is due to meet with China's top leadership, including President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang.

He is also due to attend an international meeting concerning regional cooperation and stability in the region.

The meeting will be co-chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Afghan counterpart Zarar Ahmad Osmani Friday in Beijing.

Approvals have been given for the construction of a Chinese-funded port and special economic zone in Tanzania.

The 10 billion US dollar project is due to begin next year.

Chinese port developer China Merchant Holding International and Oman's sovereign wealth fund are teaming up for the project.

Tanzanian authorities are hoping the planned port in the capital, Dar es Salaam, will help Tanzania take on neighboring Kenya for supremacy when it comes toport traffic in east Africa.
