Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi says the process of launching the Asia-Pacific Free Trade Area is expected to start during the upcoming APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Beijing. The top Chinese diplomat says the FTA will help to integrate regional bilateral and multilateral cooperation mechanisms and reduce the risk of overlap and fragmentation. Wang Yi also adds the Chinese and Canadian sides are still consulting about the possibility of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's attendance at the APEC meetings. Harper has reportedly canceled plans to attend the meeting, citing last week's attack on the country's parliament. Authorities on the mainland are expressing concerns about a new report suggesting young people from the mainland are being recruited as spies in Taiwan. A Beijing-based newspaper has reported this week that intelligence agents in Taiwan have been approaching mainland students studying on the island in an attempt to garner information from them and train them to be spies. Authorities on Taiwan have not commented on the report. The mainland's Taiwan affairs office says any attempt to try to recruit mainland students compromises their safety and undermines cross-strait educational exchanges. |
