Cardinal George Pell pleaded not guilty to criminal charges in Melbourne, Australia. He is the highest-ranking Vatican official to face charges in connection with the Catholic church sex abuse scandal.

And a fast-moving wildfire in northern Arizona has burned more than 13 square miles. State officials say at least 3,000 people are under mandatory evacuation orders.
