A Beatles tribute band
The Beatles live on stage? It must be a tribute band!
Neil:
This is Real English from BBC Learning English. I’m Neil.

Helen: 还有我,Helen。

Neil: Today we’re going to look at words and phrases that have recently become part of the English language.

Helen: 在 Real English 这个环节,我们来一起学学英语中出现的新短语和表达方式。今天要学的新词儿是什么呢,Neil?

Neil: Today’s new word is 'tribute band'.

Helen: Tribute band?这是什么呀?

Neil: I’ll explain. This phrase is made up of two words 'tribute' and 'band'.

Helen: 由两个词组成, tribute 礼物,贡品; 还有 band 乐队。

Neil: A tribute band is a group of musicians which only plays the music of a famous group – for example The Beatles – as a tribute to them.

Helen: 哦,原来这个 tribute band 只演奏一些非常出名的,有声望的乐队的音乐。

Neil: That’s right.

Helen: 他们很流行吗? Neil?

Neil: Well, yes. Nowadays many people love the Beatles, for example, but it is impossible to see them perform live. However, you could go and see a tribute band and have almost the same experience.

Helen: 那现在,有很多这种专门模仿经典乐队的乐队吗?

Neil: Yes. There are tribute bands to Abba, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, and many others.

Insert

A: I watched The Doors live in concert yesterday.

B: What? That’s impossible. Their singer died in 1971!

A: Well, it wasn’t the real Doors. It was a tribute band, from Australia actually. They were really good.

Helen: 你见过那些翻唱乐队吗?Neil?

Neil: Oh yes. I saw an Abba tribute band a while ago. It was fantastic.

Helen: Really? So they were good, then.

Neil: Yes. It’s almost like watching the real thing.

Helen: 那在那么热烈的现场,你有没有跟着一起唱啊。

Neil: Yes, of course, that’s the best bit. Everyone sang along.

Helen: 哇哦,那下次还有这样的演出,记得告诉我,我也要和你一起去体验一下。

Neil: That’s a good idea, Helen. I’m sure you’ll enjoy yourself.

Helen: 好吧,那让我们来复习一下今天学的 – a tribute band – 就是一个专门模仿已经出了名的乐队保留下来的经典曲目,服饰和声音都是保留着经典乐队之前的样子。

Neil: It looks like we are out of time. You’ve been listening to Real English from BBC Learning English. Join us again soon for more up-to-the-minute Real English. Bye.

Helen: See you next time.
