Service Program Bridges Gap Between Seniors, Young People

When he was 15 years old, Frederick Roi Marquez joined this program to serve food to seniors at Erikson Livings Green-spring community in Springfield, Virginia.

弗雷德里克·罗伊·马克斯（Frederick Roi Marquez）15岁的时候参加了这项计划，为弗吉尼亚州斯普林菲尔德的Erikson Livings 绿色春天社区的老年人提供食物。

It has to do like a lot of guidance from my bosses and my co-workers, like showing the robes, and how to be, like more patient and more understanding.

And then once, you like, start meeting the residents, it’s like, wow, I’m actually doing this, I am working.

That excitement led to a special relationship between Frederick, who lost most of his grandparents as a child and the residents.

I didn’t really have that grandparent connection that like some of my classmates had and I was got a little bit jealous, especially some people had their grandparents like down the street from them.

So then this place, I get to call so many residents, I got close with Grandma or grandpa.

They come after school and when you think about if you go in and have your dinner being served at night by young people who are enthusiastic, very ploy, very considerate, I think, for older people, it’s just a great atmosphere.

Well I remember one day in the dining room, one of the ladies was hard of hearing and the young person got down on their knees to kind of show them what was on, show this lady what was on the menu and help her, you know, just very very caring and kind and loving.

So far about 4,500 students have taken part in the program at three facilities run by Erickson Living.

The teens also get a chance to receive a scholarship.

31 students will receive scholarships this year.

今年将有31位学生获得奖学金。 

Each one will receive $10,000 in scholarship money over the course of four years of college.

Residents raise the money and choose the students eligible for scholarships.

Once they apply, they are good to go, I interviewed each one of them, they’re just great great kids.

Residents look forward to the energy those kid break.

You’ve got a grandparent and student relationship, it’s wonderful and you see them light up.

It taught me more like compassion, empathy towards other people or try to see how to be in their shoes.

Frederick says the scholarship he’s received will help him pursue a career as a social worker but the experience will impact him forever.
