Farmers Market Without Prices Thrives on the Honor System

Business is brisk here at this farmers market in Warrenton in the state of Virginia.

People are taking what they need and putting money they owe in a box.

That’s what’s special about this place. It’s up to the customer to do the right thing.

I thought I was dreaming. It…I’ve never lived anywhere where there was such a strong honor system.

And so, I wanted to not only give him what I owed him, but I wanted to give more, because I thought, wow, what kind of person is being so trustful.

Alvin Henry along with his son started this farm last year with about 15 modest tomato and corn plants.

He’s more than doubled his output this year.

I started planting a few tomato plants and some sweet corn and things like this, and I had some extra tomatoes and I started out on a very small table here.

The table was probably four foot by four foot.

And I couldn’t be there all the time, and my front door here, the office here.

I’m a real estate appraiser by trade and my front office here had a mail drop in it,and so I started asking people simply to put the money to change for the tomatoes in the front door.

Farming is still a way of life in this part of Northern Virginia, and markets like this are common during the summer and into the fall.

And for Henry, he just wanted to get rid of his extra produce without having to hire employees or be at the market all the time.

Pick what you want at your price.

You know, everything is…I don’t know, I can’t say enough good things about this.

I get some eggs and I put my money in the salt. And you know, sometimes I maybe a dollar short, I maybe a dollar over, I’ll pay the next time.

Henry says it’s all about trust, and despite what you think, he seldom ends up feeling shortchanged.

It makes them feel good.

I just…trust them and they…they put the money in and it all works out, and actually sometimes I think I have more money than what I should have.

Henry’s day job is in real estate, but farming in this market earned an enormous source of pride for him.

I don’t know if that’s like a particular thing to our region of America, like particularly coming out of rural communities but I feel like there has to be like a high level of trust in your community.

Henry says theft isn’t a problem.

In fact he says the local bears steal a lot more as produce than people ever have.
