The Science of Makeup

I am so fortunate to be a scientist because in order for you to have beauty you need to have science. In order for beauty to exist, science is at the core of that.

很高兴我成为了一名科学家，因为想变美，离不开科学，要留住美，也需要科学。 

I grew up in a very interesting Haitian community.

我在一个非常有趣的海地社区里长大， 

Coming from a Haitian family, it’s…you’re either a doctor, a nurse or something in the...in the medical field.

成长在海地家庭里就意味着，你要么会成为了一名医生，要么就成为一名护士或与医学领域相关的职业。

I started at L’Oreal in 1999.

我1999年开始在欧莱雅工作， 

I started off as a chemist working on mascaras, a great opportunity to learn and to go even further into cosmetics.

一开始是一名做睫毛膏的化学家，这是一个很好的学习机会，让我更深入地研究化妆品。 

Historically, women of color have been challenged on finding foundation shades.

回看历史，有色女性总是很难找到一款合适的基础眼影。 

My mission in makeup is to make sure that women are no longer challenged.

我的任务就是帮助她们解决这一困难。 

So, when we had the opportunity to embrace this challenge, we took it, I guess, by the horns, and created a strategy to fix the problem.

所以当我们有机会接受这个挑战时，我们迎难而上，并找到了解决问题的策略。 

So, in order for us to understand the colors that make up the skin, we had to use basically a camera.

为了了解构成皮肤的颜色，我们要使用一个类似于相机的东西。 

And this camera, instead of giving us image, gives us numbers and those numbers translates to the color and the skins.

这个相机不会给我们图像，而是给我们数字，然后我们将这些数字转化为颜色和皮肤。 

We had the opportunity to travel across the US, to different regions of the US as well as internationally, such as South Africa,

to gather skin tone measurements to make sure that the shades that we were creating were suitable for a large range of skin tones.

I think one of the great “aha!” moments that we had in taking these skin tone measurements and understanding the colors that make up the skin, is that women don’t necessarily go blacker.

They tend to go deeper, deeper in color.

她们更喜欢一种更深的颜色。 

So, what we found is that you can use a really special colorant called, ultramarine blue.

所以我们发现可以用一种非常特殊的调色剂，深蓝色。 

And ultramarine blue is a truly clean, vivid, bright, rich color that allows you to go deeper,

深蓝是一种清澈、明亮和饱满的颜色，可以让你的眼影更深， 

but as you go deeper, you’re still able to have a very natural color to the skin.

但是你的皮肤依然可以呈现出一种自然的颜色。 

We really felt a sense of satisfaction we were.

我们真的很满足。 

We felt complete in a sense, because we knew that we had found something that would allow us to give this natural look that so many women were looking for.

从某种意义上说，我们感觉圆满了，因为我们发现一种可以让女性看起来更加自然的颜色，而这是很多女性都追求的。

If I were stranded on a deserted island, I need lip gloss.

如果我被困在荒岛上，我必须带一只唇彩。 

I need for my lips to have a beautiful layer of protection and moisture.

我需要给我的嘴唇涂上好看的保护层和保持水分。 

That is my go-to. If I have to have anything in the world, it’s lip gloss.

那是我每日必备的。如果我必须要选一个东西带着，那就是唇彩。 

What makes me smile is knowing that I’m putting a smile on to someone else’s face.

让我高兴的是我们的产品可以让更多人露出笑脸。 

When I get a sense of the women that I touch, and hearing feedback from them and hearing how the work that we’re doing impacts others in a positive way, it’s what gets me up in the morning.

当我去接触这些女性，听她们的反馈，知道我们所做的是何如改善她们的生活的，我就会充满激情，每天早起。

It’s what drives me. It’s what I find to be the best thing of my day.

这就是我的动力，这就是我一天中最美的事。
