ABDUL AZIZ PLEASES HIS FATHER

When the olives had all been gathered, Sadoc came with his brother, bringing more donkeys, each with two baskets hanging on its flanks. In these baskets the olives were loaded and carried to the mill to be pressed. So the little caravan of women, now turned again into brown bundles, set out once more for the village with the children and the loaded donkeys. But they were not so gay as when they went.

After the olives had been pressed, the oil was stored in big pottery jars. They were red-brown in color, with handles at each side of the top, and they were just such jars as those in which the forty thieves were hidden in the old story of “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves”; for in many ways the life of the Arabs has not changed since the days of the “Arabian Nights.” Only Sadoc’s jars were a little smaller. He put these in a small room, a sort of storehouse, next door to his house, to keep until he should be able to go to the city of Tunis to sell them at the oil market. For the harvest from his olive orchard was the chief source of Sadoc’s income.
