This storehouse was not connected with the house itself, but was a separate building, with a door of its own which opened on to the street. This door was always kept locked with a strong padlock, for fear of thieves. And, lest someone might break in, Sadoc kept a watchdog on the flat roof of the storehouse, which was lower than the roofs beside it.

Abdul Aziz’s bed was below a window which looked out over the roof of the storehouse, and when he looked out on moonlit nights, he could see the dog moving restlessly about, or hear it howling to the moon. Sometimes he felt sorry for it.

One night, while the oil was stored next door, Abdul Aziz waked up suddenly, hearing the dog growl in its throat. It was not a loud growl, but it sounded surprised. Abdul Aziz looked out, but the night was dark, and there were no street lights in the village. He could see nothing. But he listened intently.
