The presidents of China and Turkey have sat down for talks in Beijing and reached agreements on a wide range of topics including counter-terrorism and cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Tuesday's meeting between President Xi Jinping and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had been widely expected to consolidate the strong strategic relations between the two sides.

During the talks, the Chinese president suggested that enhancing strategic cooperation is of great significance for both countries.

"China and Turkey are both major emerging markets and developing countries. The two sides should deepen political mutual trust, beef up strategic communication, firmly uphold the international system with the United Nations at the core and the international law as the basis, safeguard multilateralism and international fairness and justice, as well as the multilateral trading regime with World Trade Organization at the core and guard the common interests of China and Turkey as well as developing countries at large."

Xi Jinping said China appreciates Turkey's efforts against anti-China separatist activities and its strong support for China's anti-terrorist operations, calling on both sides to strengthen cooperation in the field of international anti-terrorism.

He suggested the two sides move faster in dovetailing the Belt and Road Initiative with the Middle Corridor project and maintain contact and coordination on regional affairs, and to jointly advance political settlements for hot-spot issues.

For his part, Erdogan said the close bilateral ties are significant for regional peace and prosperity.

"The bilateral friendship, forged along with the development of the Silk Road, dates back to ancient times and has been further reinforced today. I believe the relationship between Turkey and China has great potential. Turkey stays committed to the One-China policy. I make the trip against the backdrop of the growing challenge to the world's peace and development. The constant development of Sino-Turkish relations will make significant contributions to the development and prosperity in the region and around the world."

Erdogan suggested it's a hard fact that residents of various ethnicities are living happily in Xinjiang under China's development and prosperity.

He stressed that Turkey will not allow anyone to drive a wedge in its relations with China.

He also said he hopes the two sides can step up cooperation in areas such as trade, investment and 5G networks as well as exchanges in educational, cultural and scientific research sectors.
