Federal police are investigating damaging leaks against the Home Affairs minister Peter Dutton in the au pair affair. It's understood officers raided offices in Canberra this morning as they gather evidence. Mr Dutton used his ministerial discretion to overturn departmental decisions and grant tourist visas to two European au pairs in 2015.

Scott Morrison has made his first major pre-election pitch as prime minister — vowing to fast track tax cuts for small and medium businesses. The coalition now plans to bring forward the second tranche of cuts five years early, reducing the tax rate to 25 per cent for companies with a turnover of up to 50 million dollars.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped more than three percent in a day, and the S&P 500 marked its biggest daily decline since February.
