Greek voters have decisively rejected the terms of a bailout deal offered by international lenders. With all of votes now counted, more than 61% of people said no, thousands of supporters of the no campaigner celebrating in front of the parliament in Athens, waving flags, chanting and setting off fireworks. The Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said the outcome was not a vote against Europe, but a mandate for negotiating a viable solution to the debt crisis.

“Dear Greeks, today’s referendum doesn’t have winners and losers, it is a big victory by itself. Today, altogether, we wrote a glorious page in European history, we proved that even in the worst circumstance democracy cannot be blackmailed. We also proved that when a nation has a faith and collective consciousness it can stand and overcome any difficulties.”

The head of Eurogroup Jeroen Dijsselbloem said the referendum result was very regrettable for the future of Greece. Euro zone leaders will hold a summit on Tuesday to discuss the situation. The German and French leaders who spoke on the phone say the will of the Greek people has to be respected. The president of the European parliament Martin Schulz said it was up to Greece to come up with solutions.

“I hope that the Greek government, they are making in the next coming hours, a meaningful and constructive proposal that allowing that it is possible to renegotiate. If not, we are entering a very difficult and even dramatic time.”

Some European ministers have expressed shock at that result. But the Italian foreign minister said it was time to resume talks on a new deal. In Spain, the leader of the anti-austerity Podemos party Pablo Iglesias welcomed the results as a decisive victory for democracy.

The value of Euro has fallen against the dollar and Yen amid speculation that Athen has taken a significant step towards leaving the Euro zone. As our economic editor Robert Pastern reports the Greek economy is now in a dire situation.

“Even in combat by severe restriction on cash transfers and withdraws, I have learned that Greek banks are just days away from running out of cash and collapsing, a humanitarian disaster in Mr. Tsipras’s words. Greek banks are desperately in need of lender’s last resort to save them and Greek economy. And no bank or central bank have much spoken the relieves, the European central bank can’t any longer fulfill that function. ”

After the outcome of the referendum became clear, the leader of Greece’s main opposition party resigned, Antonis Samaras had campaigned for a yes vote.
