Ex-president Karzai urges Washington to return Afghanistan's assets

Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai is urging the U.S. administration to return his country's assets.

President Joe Biden has signed an executive order to free some 7 billion dollars of the frozen Afghan assets, splitting the money between humanitarian aid for cash-strapped Afghanistan and a fund for the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Criticizing Biden's decision as unjust, Karzai stressed that all Afghan people including members of the current Taliban-led caretaker government take a united stand to get the Afghan money back to their country.

Biden, Putin discuss Ukraine crisis over phone

U.S. President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin have held a phone conversation over the situation in Ukraine.

The White House said Biden made it clear to Putin that "while the United States remains prepared to engage in diplomacy," it is "equally prepared for other scenarios."

The Kremlin said Russia has not received a substantive response from the U.S. on security guarantees.

U.S. denies conducting operations in Russian territorial waters

The United States has denied having conducted military operations in Russian territorial waters.

Moscow earlier claimed that one of its naval vessels repelled a U.S. submarine in its waters in the Pacific Ocean.

Russia also accused Washington of creating a national security threat at a time of high tension over Ukraine.
