1.Hurricane Dolly has reached shore near South Padre Island in Texas. The storm has forced thousands of people into shelters on both sides of the Texas-Mexico border. As it headed inland, Dolly weakened slightly to a Category 1 storm with top winds near 95 miles per hour.

2.Barack Obama says it's in Israel's best interest to reach a lasting peace with the Palestinians. Obama is trying to allay doubts about his support for Israel saying he has an unshakable commitment to Israel's security.

3.Microsoft founder Bill Gates and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg are pooling 375 million dollars of their money into a global effort to cut smoking. The new effort will target developing countries where tobacco use is highest. The money will support projects that increase tobacco taxes, help smokers quit and protect nonsmokers from smoke exposure.

4.State police in Rhode Island say they arrested a man whose blood alcohol level was 0. 491 percent. That's the highest ever in the state for someone who wasn't dead. The 34-year-old was taken to a hospital for detox and was later arraigned.
