1.Roland Burris is scheduled to meet with Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid today. He was turned away from Capitol Hill yesterday after his appointment by the embattled governor of Illinois to fill President-elect Barack Obama's Senate seat. Senate officials in both parties now predict the political drama will end with Burris being seated.
 
2.The Israeli military says it will briefly halt operations in Gaza for a few hours a day to allow in humanitarian aid and fuel. Israel is coming under increasing criticism since a mortar strike killed 39 Palestinians near a U.N. school.

3.Aviation experts say strong crosswinds were a likely factor in last month's plane accident in Denver. The Continental jet veered off the runway, injuring 38 people. Officials still think mechanical or human error may also have been a factor.

4.Hundreds of Chinese polar bear swimmers took a plunge in an ice pool Tuesday. The two-day contest attracts swimmers from all over the country to the northeast region where it's especially cold this time of year. The event is popular with Chinese retirees for its supposed health benefits.
