1. A dozen private boats have taken over in the search off the Florida coast for any sign of two missing NFL players and a friend. The Coast Guard called off its search for the men. But crews gathered Wednesday to retrieve their overturned fishing boat.

2. A man accused of killing his girlfriend was shot to death in a California courtroom Wednesday. Officials say David Paradiso apparently punched and possibly stabbed the judge presiding over his murder trial, prompting a detective to open fire. The judge was taken out of the courthouse on a stretcher, but told reporters she was OK.

3. Former first lady Barbara Bush recovering from open-heart surgery. Doctors scheduled the procedure to replace Mrs.Bush's aortic valve after she experienced shortness of breath.

4. After weeks of VIP treatment, the co-pilot whose plane safely landed in the Hudson River says he'll go back to work by the end of the month. First Officer Jeffrey Skiles says he will do a few simulated flights before he actually gets in the cockpit.
