3.Police in Carthage, North Carolina say a single shot from a police officer was able to halt a murderer's rampage in a North Carolina nursing home yesterday. But that came after a gunman killed seven residents and a nurse. They still don't know where and why the 45-year-old suspect had opened fire.

4.The Red River is drawing back, but now flood-threatened Fargo, North Dakota has a new enemy--wind. A snowstorm headed for the city is expected to roil the overfilled river, testing the levees built to protect the city from a major flood.
