1.President Barack Obama is encouraging the nation's students to find what they are good at and stick with it. He spoke to students at a high school in a Washington suburb. Other kids watched the speech on TV at schools nationwide. Conservative groups accused Obama of stepping too far into local education. Some school districts decided not to show his speech.

2.Justice Sonia Sotomayer has taken her seat at the Supreme Court. Chief Justice John Robert administered the oath of office. Tuesday's ceremony was just for show though. The justices will return Wednesday for the argument in a key case about campaign finance law.

3.Space shuttle Discovery has left the International Space Station. Discovery undocked from the space station Tuesday, ending more than a week of linked flight in which tons of supplies and equipment were dropped off.

4.Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez received a movie star welcome at the Venice Film Festival where he walked the red carpet with Director Oliver Stone for the premiere of a documentary Stone made about the South American leader. Hundreds of admirers were on hand.
