1.Eight American troops were killed in two separate bomb attacks today in southern Afghanistan. Their deaths make October the deadliest month of the war for US forces since the 2001 invasion.

2.President Barack Obama announced over three billion dollars for projects aimed at modernizing the nation's power grid. Obama likens this effort to the ambitious development of the national highway system 50 years ago.

3.A Connecticut man has been charged with the murder of a University of Connecticut football player. And two others were charged in the fight that led the stabbing death of 20-year-old Jesper Howard.  

4.Michael Jackson's "THIS IS IT" opens nationwide. The documentary focuses on the singer's preparations for his comeback concerts. Jackson died just days before the shows were about to kick off.
