[00:-3.00]FATHER AND SON
[00:-4.00]Most films these days are easy to describe
[00:-5.00]because they fit into types such as martial arts films or love stories.
[00:-6.00]But Father and Son is different.
[00:-7.00]It is a film about the love and conflict between a father and his son.
[00:-8.00]It is a film about real Hong Kong people.
[00:-9.00]The film is set in Hong Kong in the recent past.
[00:10.00]It shows us the life of the Law family during the 1960s,
[00:11.00]when they were living in a squatter area,
[00:12.00]and then in the 1970s,when they were living in a resettlement estate.
[00:13.00]3.The two main characters are the father,Mr Law,and his son,Law Ka Hing.
[00:14.00]Mr Law is a low paid clerk in an office.
[00:15.00]He cannot get promotion because of his lack of qualifications.
[00:16.00]Therefore,he is determined that his only son,Ka Hing,
[00:17.00]should get good exam results.
[00:18.00]Ka Hing, however,is not very interested in school work.
[00:19.00]His only ambition is to make films.
[00:20.00]4.The film starts with the tragic ending to the story.
[00:21.00]Old Mr Law opens a letter from his son and his face lights up.
[00:22.00]'At last,'he says.He rushes up the stairs of his resettlement block,
[00:23.00]but he is so excited that he suffers a heart attack and falls down the stairs
[00:24.00]A piece of paper drops from his hand and floats down to where he is lying.
[00:25.00]It is his son's graduation certificate.
[00:26.00]Just as he has achieved his life's ambition,he dies.
[00:27.00]After this sad opening, the film goes back about 15 years,
[00:28.00]to show us the early relationship between father and son.
[00:29.00]The Law family is very poor, and the father works hard to support them.
[00:30.00]Ka Hing's sisters do well in school
[00:31.00] but their father is mainly interested in Ka Hing since he is the only son.
[00:32.00]7.Ka Hing is fascinated by the cinema.
[00:33.00]He always wants to watch films or to make his own.
[00:34.00]He has such a strong love of films that it distracts him from his studies.
[00:35.00]As a result,he finally fails his 'A' Levels.
[00:36.00]Because of this failure,Mr Law decides that Ka Hing must go to America to study
[00:37.00]To pay for this,he forces one daughter to marry a wealthy husband,
[00:38.00]and the other to give up college and get a job.
[00:39.00]Their loyalty is so strong that they accept his wishes.
[00:40.00]Ka Hing is reluctant to go to America.
[00:41.00]But finally he sees that his father will be heartbroken if he disobeys,
[00:42.00]and thus he agrees to go.
[00:43.00]The film is sad because it is partly based on the life of its brilliant director
[00:44.00]Fong Yuk Ping.
[00:45.00]Fong also had a difficult relationship with his father,
[00:46.00]and studied film in America.
[00:47.00]Tragically,Fong's own father and his mother were killed in a plane crash as they flew to America for his graduation ceremony
[00:48.00]The film is always interesting to watch as it is very realistic.
[00:49.00]The director's use of little details of everyday life is very good.
[00:50.00]For example,we see Ka Hing (as a young boy) making a simple toy cinema
[00:51.00]with a candle and a box,to show his interest in films.
[00:52.00]This film shows us many things about Hong Kong family life
[00:53.00]and problems which we can all understand.
[00:54.00]It is a serious film, but it is also very entertaining and often very funny.
[00:55.00]I would definitely recommend it.
