East Timor's main pro-independence (1)alliance will be (2)dissolved this week to allow new political parties to run in the country's first government (3)elections. The National Council of Timorese Resistance, or CNRT, along with the FALINTIL (4)guerilla force - have come to (5)symbolize the epic 24-year struggle against Indonesian rule.
The CNRT's name and flag were used by the United Nations to symbolize the independence vote from Indonesia during the 1999 (6)ballot for self-determination.
The CNRT's function was to serve as a resistance umbrella group and not as a political party. It had offices in Australia and Portugal from which it (7)waged a (8)relentless campaign to ensure East Timor's independence struggle was not forgotten by the international community.
Unlike the FALINTIL guerilla force, which transformed into East Timor's new army, the CNRT, the political wing of the independence movement, will be dissolved.
Former CNRT head of security and veteran independence fighter, David Ximines, says the dissolution of the alliance is necessary to allow political parties to compete in August 30 elections for a (9)constituent assembly. "We have to let our partners here, to involve them directly in the political process in this transition. We don't want to let CNRT act as an umbrella for every party here," Mr. Ximines said.
On Tuesday, independence leader Xanana Gusmao paid homage to the organization praising its members for their selfless devotion to the independence struggle.
