2. An official of Massey Energy says allegations the company put profits over safety are a big lie. An explosion in one of the company’s mines in West Virginia killed 29. Massey says air samples did not show high levels of explosive gases before the accident.

3. A merger in the rental car world. Hertz says it is buying rival rental Dollar Thrifty for almost 1.2 billion dollars in cash and stock. Hertz says the deal will help expand its vacation business.

4. President Barack Obama salutes the New York Yankees at the White House for winning the World Series. For some on the team, this is their fifth visit to the White House, already having a handful of championship rings.
