President Bush is meeting with European Union leaders in Gothenberg, Sweden, the latest stop on his European tour. He will likely discuss his 1)controversial trade and environmental policies. Thousands of protesters are expected to demonstrate outside the summit site, threatening to 2)overshadow the meetings.
There is a heavy police presence in Gothenberg, with 3)authorities hoping to prevent an 4)outbreak of violence as protesters demonstrating against global trade and other issues march on the city.
Trade is expected to be high on the 5)agenda. European allies may raise their concerns about Mr. Bush's decision to seek a probe of whether a 6)surge of steel imports has hurt the U.S. steel industry. Europeans see the move as 7)protectionist.
Another contentious issue before summit leaders is the environment, and Mr. Bush's decision to 8)abandon the 1997 Kyoto Treaty to limit 9)greenhouse gas 10)emissions. It is a move that has angered European allies.
The President is expected to try to allay concerns by discussing his own 11)alternative proposals to the Kyoto pact, which he opposes on grounds it 12)exempts developing nations and would hurt the U.S. economy.
At a lunch meeting with EU leaders, Mr. Bush sounded a 13)conciliatory note. "What the people of Sweden and Europe will realize is that my administration is deeply 14)committed to a prosperous Europe, and a whole Europe and a free Europe, and we look forward to a 15)constructive relationship,"Bush said.
Mr. Bush holds a 16)news conference later in the day, and attends a dinner reception with EU leaders at the Borsen Stock Exchange Thursday night.
