For those in favor of the draft resolution raise their hand. The result of the voting is as follows. The draft resolution received 15 votes in favor. The draft resolution has been adopted unanimously. The UN Security Council has unanimously approved an extra 3,500 troops and police officers to bolster security in Haiti to ensure that desperately needed aid gets to earthquake victims. The resolution will add 2,000 troops to the 7,000 military peacekeepers already in the country and 1,500 police to the 2,100 strong international police force.Advocates for the additional forces said the extra soldiers were essential due to the tremendous number of request to escort humanitarian convoys.

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he was grateful for the Security Council's swift action in adopting the resolution.By approving my proposal today to send an additional 2,000 soldiers and 1,500 police officers to Haiti. The Council sends a clear signal. The world is with Haiti.

Meanwhile, additional help in the form of US forces was on its way too.In a briefing to reporters at the Pentagon via video conference from Haiti.Major General Dan Allyn said that even greater numbers are on route.

We currently have over 2,000 troops on the ground, and over 5,000 afloat. And we anticipate we'll have an aggregate strength of over 10,000 within the coming weeks, with about 50% of those forces directly involved in delivering humanitarian assistance ashore.
