菲尔·柯林斯于1951年出生于英国伦敦，童年时代就酷爱戏剧和音乐。出道时他只是一个乐队的鼓手，80年代初才正式开始个人发展。1989年推出的专辑《郑重其事（But Seriously）》获得了巨大的成功，柯林斯也因此赢得了1990年度美国音乐奖的最佳摇滚艺术家奖和格莱美最佳个人专辑、最佳单曲、最佳流行男歌手3项大奖。
柯林斯嗓音浑厚、充满激情，深受歌迷喜爱。更为可贵的是，在他近30年的艺术生涯中，他已从一名鼓手成长为集作词、作曲、演唱、演奏、制作为一身的摇滚艺术家。
