从U2发展至今的整个历史来看，他们始终没有把摇滚同关注与参与社会和政治活动分开过，他们的作品始终洋溢着一种激情，一种期望改变旧世界、歌颂献身的激情。主唱Bono更是经常以个人名义致力于如反战、支持亚洲某地区独立等自发性国际政治活动，这首歌就是献给缅甸反对党领导人——Aung San Suu Kyi（翁山苏姬）的作品，激励她坚持自己的理想，不要因为遭遇挫折而放弃过去的努力。
同年，在英国的利姆里克市获得选秀比赛的冠军之后，U2被知名的音乐经纪人Paul McGuinness看中，并很快与CBS爱尔兰唱片公司签约。他们的第一张专辑《EP U2:3》中收录的单曲《Out of Control (1979)》成功地登上了爱尔兰流行歌曲排行榜的榜首，后来又以一曲《Another Day (1980)》再次占据排行榜首位。此后，他们推出了一张又一张深受乐迷喜爱的专辑，逐渐确立了自己在摇滚音乐史上不可撼动的地位。
