The effort to eliminate trade barriers is also seen across the Strait. The fifth regular meeting of the cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Committee concluded in Taipei on Tuesday. The Chinese mainland and Taiwan, reached consensus¹ to bring economic ties closer.

Two years after the signing of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement, or ECFA, economic ties between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan are growing stronger under a Early Harvest Program. There are more promising² plans in the pipeline³.

"(Two associations), the mainland's Association of Economy and Trade, and the Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers, are expected to be inaugurated in the first half of next year," Gao Yan, Vice⁴ Minister of Ministry⁵ of Commerce, says.

The two sides also reach agreements on trade dispute settlement and customs procedures.

"The exchange of electronic customs data for commodities under the ECFA will be used between the two sides next year. Meanwhile, the mutual⁶ recognition of Authorized⁷ Economic Operation will be completed as well. These moves will create more convenient and safer environment for trade in the future," Zhuo Shizhao, Chief Representative of ECC of Taiwan, says.

One more outcome was the two sides agreeing to push for the implementation⁸ of a services trade agreement, which will benefit the cross-Strait service industry and generate more jobs.
