The Chinese icebreaker, Snow Dragon, stuck in Antarctic ice on a rescue mission, is planning to send a helicopter to explore the way to the trapped Russian ship MV Akademik Shokalskiy. 

The Snow Dragon has reported that the sky is clearing and the surrounding ice is loosening. Earlier, the icebreaker came within 7 nautical¹ miles of the Russian ship, but had to retreat when the ice became too thick. The Russian ship is on a research expedition. On Tuesday, blizzard² winds pushed the sea ice around it and froze it in place. Another icebreaker, Australia’s Aurora³ Australis, is expected to arrive today. It’s said to have the best chance of cutting through the ice. The Snow Dragon will remain in the area in case its help is needed.
