Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a 3-day visit to China on the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. Modi will visit Beijing, Shanghai and Xian during his trip and meet with high-level leaders. The expectations are high for the inking of business deals and a possible positive movement on the Sino-Indian border dispute. Let’s go to India and see what the expectations are in the country for Modi’s China visit.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 3-day visit will see him meet with China’s top leadership. The visit is going to be a mix of personal messages with diplomatic and economic talks.

While Modi is using social media and yoga to reach out to Chinese people….the Indian ministry of external affairs says they expect a range of issues to be discussed.

"You may expect that a full range of political issues will be discussed, bilateral ties, regional issues, and multilateral issues," Indian foreign secretary Dr. s. Jaishankar said.

But trade will be on top of the agenda including ways to tackle the trade imbalance between China and India. India will also try and get more access for its pharmaceutical and IT-enabled services in the Chinese market.

Narendra Modi's visit to China is being seen as one of the most important visits in his first year as India's Prime Minister. In fact experts suggest, that to see a real Asian century, it’s important that China and India better relations not just economically, but also diplomatically.

During Modi’s visit, the border dispute, coordinating on multi-lateral forums and increasing cultural exchanges will be discussed. Deals on railways will also be on the table. Many deals are expected to be signed according to the Indian ministry of external affairs. And, India will discuss cooperation in the Asian Infrastructure and Investment Bank.

Alka Acharaya is the Director of the Institute of Chinese Studies in New Delhi. She says, there will be efforts by both nations to ensure that the visit is successful.

"Modi's agenda has been one of modernisation and development and clearly China is the one country where Modi would be looking for investment for getting the trade imbalance rectified, for infrastructure development. So all this are also going to play a role. The third thing I think is also larger picture that is unfolding in Asia. It has to do with how India and China are going to engage with each other and the foundation for this Asia century being laid by China and India," Alka Acharaya, director of Institute Of Chinese Studies in Delhi, said.

In an interview with Delhi-based Chinese media before his visit, Modi said he wants to focus on strengthening mutual trust and confidence between China and India, to realize the full potential of the relationship.

He also called the Sino-Indian relationship one of the defining ones of the century, but when Modi visits China it will be a tight rope walk between solving disputes while keeping an eye on partnership between the world's two fastest growing economies.
