Hi, I'm Susan Orlean. I'm the author of a story in this week's magazine about Rin Tin Tin, the dog actor.

Rin Tin Tin was found on the battlefield in World War I in France, brought back to the United States by an American GI. After a slow-start getting his foot in the door or all four feet in the door, he became a huge star in Hollywood. One of the six films that still exists was called "Clash of the Wolves ". It came out in 1925. Some of it is pure action. There's a scene where he is being pursued by the ranchers, and he is simply just shooting like a bullet across the plains. Pre-CGI, pre-special effect - this was what was really happening. Rin Tin Tin comes to the base of a tree. Then you would think: well, that's it. He is stuck now.
"I've never seen a dog climb a tree. I didn't think a dog could climb a tree."
After that chase, he has fallen down and tumbled through a huge cactus1 to get a huge thorn skewered2 through his paw, and he is very badly injured. He limps home. And it's almost unbearable3 to watch him. He looks so miserable4. He looks like he's in such pain. It's a very moving scene. No matter how skeptical5 you might be about whether a dog could convey emotion, he really does. It was the scene that more than almost anything made me understand why people love Rin Tin Tin.
