There is anger in the Coalition¹ at attempt to destabilize Malcolm Turnbull's leadership. Shadow Treasurer² Joe Hockey yesterday revealed he'd been approached to replace Mr. Turnbull. But he says he remains³ loyal. Opposition⁴ to Mr. Turnbull's leadership centers around his emissions⁵ trading strategy.

New figures due out today are expected to show an increase in unemployment. The majority of economists⁶ are predicting a loss of 10,000 jobs in September. That would take the jobless rate from 5.8 percent in August to 6 percent-its highest level in about six years.

Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi says he won’t resign. The Constitutional Court has overturned an immunity⁷ law, which protects him from prosecution⁸ while in office. The ruling opens the possibility that Mr. Berlusconi could stand trial in at least three court cases.

And a strong typhoon is forecast to hit the main Japanese island of Honshu this morning. Typhoon Melor could dump up to half a meter of rain with wind gusts⁹ of more than 200 kilometres an hour. The weather bureau has issued high-wave warnings, and there are fears of flash flooding and landslides¹⁰.
