英闻天下——390 Sudan and South Sudan Agree New Oil Deal

 　　Sudan and South Sudan have agreed on a new deal which will see oil production resuming after more than a year.

 

　　Under the new agreement, which was reached in Ethiopia, production will resume in the South from the 24th of March.

 

　　The South separated from the rest of Sudan in 2011. However, both still rely heavily on the export of oil which gets pumped from the South across Sudanese pipelines¹.

 

　　Production had been stalled though after bitter disputes over fee negotiations².

 

　　Earlier, the two sides also agreed to withdraw their troops from the demilitarized zone between the two countries.

 

　　Sudan's defense³ minister Mohamed Hussein made the announcement on Monday.

 

　　"The withdraw starts now, and will last for one week. A supervision⁴ mechanism⁵ has been set up, and is already in motion."

 

　　He said the withdrawal⁶ is the first step to carry out the border security agreement.

 

　　The agreement, which was signed on the 8th of March, includes a timetable for setting up a demilitarized buffer⁷ zone along the border and deploying⁸ monitoring forces there.
