　　首先我们来亮一下冰冰对on the contrary探索的结论吧。

　　(1) on the contrary 前后主体一致时，描述性内容不取反。

　　(2) on the contrary 前后主体不一致时，描述性内容取反。

　　(3) on the contrary 与but等转折连词连用时，直接忽略。

　　背景

　　on the contrary 到底是否取反突然今年夏天就火了，之前我也并没有意识到这个问题，而突如起来的一系列问题让我开始重新审视这个短语。似乎得到一些有益的结论，让我抽丝剥茧，给你来个介绍一下吧。

　　我们先从中文出发

　　如果我说，“我长得不丑;恰恰相反，我长得______” 这个时候，你的本能一定是填写美对不对。我长得不丑，恰恰相反，我长得很美。这是多么通顺的句子，可是有同学说，老师我长得不丑和我长得美不是一个意思么?这个恰恰相反反在了哪里?on the contrary用在了哪里呢?

　　如果我说，“我长得不丑;恰恰相反，万炜长得____”这个时候，你的本能一定是填写丑对不对(即使没有第一句，你也应该填写丑，嗯，万老师不要打我)。这时候我们发现就是对前面的不丑取了反。

　　我们再看看longman对于on the contrary 的解释：

　　used to add to a negative statement, to disagree with a negative statement by someone else, or to answer no to a question

　　所以到底取反与否?你会发现这是和on the contrary前后修饰对象相关的。我想你没有必要那么复杂深邃的去想这个问题，记清楚一开始我讲的三个原则就应该可以解决现在所有的问题。我们先来看几个GRE填空中的原句来感受一下吧。

　　例1

　　That the artist chose to remain in his hometown does not mean that he remained (i) __________; on the contrary, he (ii) __________ the international artistic¹ movements of his day.

　　这道题目的正确答案是AF。我们会发现，on the contrary前后主体是一直的，都是同一时刻同一地点的一个人，所以前面和后面的描述性内容应该是一致的。所以前面说这并不意味着他怎么样，后面就应该说他没怎么样。AF答案显而易见，前面说他并不狭隘，后面说他很国际化，就是对一个意思的加强，核心描述性内容没有变化。

　　例2

　　The sea was not an (i) _______ the (ii) _______ of the windmill; on the contrary, while the concept of the new invention passed quickly from seaport⁵ to seaport, it made little headway inland.

　　(A) element in.. evolution

　　(B) issue in . . acceptance

　　这道题目答案应该选择D选项。海洋对于风车产生一个动作;恰恰相反，虽然新东西在海港上快速传播，却在内陆没有任何进展。所以第二个空格应该确定是跟传播(pass quickly)相关。第一个空格就应该体现出海洋没有什么障碍，因为在seaport传播很快。所以我们选择D。

　　我们现在再来分析一下这句话，大家会发现。前后主体不一致了。这句话如果简化的说就是海洋不是障碍;恰恰相反，陆地是障碍。 在主体不同的时候，我们就需要构造对比了。

　　例3

　　Early studies often concluded that the public was _______ the propagandistic influence of mass communications, but one recent study indicates that, on the contrary, mass communications seldom produce marked changes in social attitudes or actions.

　　A. unaware⁷ of

　　B. scornful of

　　C. susceptible⁸ to

　　D. unimpressed by

　　这道题目应该选择C。说的是早起的研究认为政治传播会影响大众，但是最近的研究，恰恰相反，发现大众传播不会对人们产生任何影响。这里面因为有了but，所以我们直接把on the contrary忽略掉就可以了，就是一个加强语气。直接按照一个简单的but句子来进行就可以了。那么即使没有but。我们也应该取反。为什么呢。因为前后的主体不一致。前面的主体是早起研究的结论，后面的主体是最近研究的结论。他们是不同的主体，所以没有but也还是要取反的。

3 obstinate   

adj.顽固的，倔强的，不易屈服的，较难治愈的

参考例句：

• She's too obstinate to let anyone help her.她太倔强了，不会让任何人帮她的。
• The trader was obstinate in the negotiation.这个商人在谈判中拗强固执。

4 abreast   

adv.并排地；跟上(时代)的步伐，与…并进地

参考例句：

• She kept abreast with the flood of communications that had poured in.她及时回复如雪片般飞来的大批信件。
• We can't keep abreast of the developing situation unless we study harder.我们如果不加强学习，就会跟不上形势。

5 seaport

参考例句：

6 diffusion

参考例句：

7 unaware   

a.不知道的，未意识到的

参考例句：

• They were unaware that war was near. 他们不知道战争即将爆发。
• I was unaware of the man's presence. 我没有察觉到那人在场。

8 susceptible

参考例句：
