这个短语最早从莎士比亚的《仲夏夜之梦》里来，当时叫“cheek by cheek”。两个世纪之后才出现了“cheek by jowl”这种说法。“Cheek”和“jowl”都是脸颊的意思。想想，两个人的脸颊都贴到一起了，还有比这更亲密的吗？
