两者均可表示“电报”，但 telegram 指通过电报发出的电文，通常用作可数名词;而 telegraph 则指用电报发送信息的通讯方式，通常用作不可数名词。如：
She received a telegram of congratulations. 她收到一份祝贺电报。
The telegraph has been cut between the two cities. 这两座城市之间的电报业务已中断。
表示“通过电报”，本来应该用 by telegraph，但事实上也可用 by telegram。如;
He told us the news by telegram [=by telegraph]. 他用电报告诉我们这条消息。
